Dear Families
I am thrilled to share just some of the many things that have been going on in school. I hope that with restrictions lifting we can start to invite families back into school, so you can see for yourselves! We miss being able to do that but, as you will appreciate, it is necessary to keep everyone healthy and keep our children in school learning.
As always there has been some super teaching and learning going on in class, but we have also been busy redesigning our curriculum and made huge improvements to our resources, and the school environment.
I hope you will enjoy reading this newsletter and share our excitement in our learning and continuous improvement to our school.
Best wishes
Mr Ginn

Over the last 18 months we have been redesigning our curriculum.
What we teach and what children learn are super important. We have reorganised what we do and when we do it, thinking carefully about how it is all sequenced. We have also invested some excellent schemes, including Get Set For PE, which provides high quality planning and is enjoyed by children and staff alike.
It has been a huge task but a rewarding one. It doesn’t stop there though, our curriculum will always evolve to reflect the changing world our children are growing-up in.
Mrs Reid and I are in the middle of updating our curriculum pages on our website. I will let you know when these are complete. There will be information you can use to work at home with your children.

In Reception class we have enjoyed watching some caterpillars grow and learning about their life cycle
We spent many happy hours searching for minibeasts in our outside area.
We also developed our writing skills by re-telling and innovating the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

We have taken the opportunity to improve access to approximately an acre of woodland at the far end of the Muga pitch. This is an area brimming with outdoor learning opportunities for our children. Speaking of which, two members of staff are currently being trained as Forest Schools Practitioners, enabling us to run some sessions in this wonderful space. After the challenges of the pandemic, I can see great benefits for our children’s mental health and wellbeing. If you want to read more about Forest Schools and its benefits, please follow this link.

In Year 1 we have loved our History topic where we have focused on a significant person in History: Florence Nightingale
We have been great at letter writing for our non-fiction focus in English where we received a news announcement from Boris Johnson explaining he was banning chocolate, sweets and ice cream for 5 and 6 year olds!
|
The children had some great ideas for our letters of complaint. We also explored Hot Seating when looking at a meeting tale between a giant and a little girl. This was a first time experience for Year 1 and they did brilliantly!
In Art we have had a drawing focus this half term. The children have loved doing art in the hall and have really impressed me with the attitude and creative attempts.

We are about to place an order for a massive £8000 of lovely library books. Reading is so important and reading for pleasure can be a lifelong joy, so we are investing in new books for every year group. As always, the Friends of Eye School have supported us and will be investing in a system to help us scan books in and out like a proper library! Beep beep!

In Year 2 we loved learning about microhabitats and helping Mr Everitt to build bug hotels.
We have enjoyed our class novel 'The Nothing To See Here Hotel' and have been inspired to write some fantastic defeating the monster stories.
|
We have also been learning about the History of Transport, and became particularly interested in the life and mysterious disappearance of Amelia Earhart!

At long last, our hall roof is being repaired! You will no doubt have noticed some scaffolding around the school. It is a result of a great deal of work by the school and our Trust to win a bid from central government of some £125,000. The benefits will be great, including no more leaks and improved insulation! The project has been planned to ensure the safety of all at school and to minimise disruption and should be completed in around another 6 weeks, weather permitting. We are also hoping to replace the hall floor as part of these works. This is long overdue and will very welcome for indoor PE sessions and assemblies once we able to all gather in the hall.

We have explored magnets and carried out investigations such as to test the strength of a magnet and looked at how to make electromagnets.

In Year 4 we really went to town on the NSPCC Maths Day. We spent the morning pretending to be the people running the country, based on our class book The Accidental Prime Minister!
In English we worked really hard to come up with our own Warning Tales, everyone did really well.
|
And Geography we looked at adaptations of camels in the desert. The children drew some excellent pictures of camels and labelled the adaptations accordingly.

In Geography Year 5 looked at two different case studies of human activity that has affected coast lines: The Akosombo Dam in Ghana, West Africa and land reclamation in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, both places in the world where human intervention has had a positive and negative affect on coastlines.
In English, we have been reading, writing and working around the picture book The Island, by Armin Greder where we have engaged with drama to study characterisation, unpicked the nature and consequences of discrimination and the fear that can exist around unknown cultures, written a diary entry and monologue as one of the story's characters and role played to bring the story to life.
In PSHE we have been learning about how to look after our mental health and be happy where we had several circle time sessions to discuss strategies to keep healthy minds and happy lives. We also spent time recognising things that are good about us and others in our class.

It was momentous to be able to go to our church and celebrate Easter with our classes and to have partaken in whole school Collective Worship where our prayer ambassadors have been able to share prayers which they have written.

In Year 6 we participated in World Mental Health Awareness week on Thurs 13th May. The theme was nature, so we spent the afternoon exploring our grounds. We made mud pies, climbed trees, hunted for bugs, played in the bushes, built dens and homes for small animals!
Y6 have written some excellent examples of narratives which include flashbacks. We've created a variety of short bursts of writing which include flashbacks. Our writing has been inspired by video clips, music videos and images. We've also linked some of our writing to our history topic which is WW2.
Y6 have got stuck into their maths topic, Algebra, this half-term. They've blown me away with their increasing confidence with the topic They've tackled formulae, equations and number sequences with maturity and great motivation!
